Conclusion

Havea and Papanikolaou are alike correct: postmodernity is not something we should fear, but an aspect of our contemporary world we must engage. I still believe that the primary work of Faith and Order concerns a matter internal to the church—its unity in truth and the divisions that hinder the full realization of that unity in truth. Our Lord, however, did not pray that we be taken out of this world (John 17:15). We live within it and it lives within us. But, echoing Havea, I would add that we have a home in this world only as in diaspora, “for here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come” (Heb. 13:14). And that city is the New Jerusalem of Christ, who is the same, yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8).
